Rear suspension shocks allow the back wheel of a mountain bike to absorb bumps on the trail, providing a smoother ride and better rear-end traction. The two types of rear suspension systems are air and coil-spring shocks. Air shocks are lighter and highly adjustable while coil springs tend to be more sensitive and require less maintenance over time.
